The next major update to Apple’s mobile device operating system, iOS 8, will apparently include functionality for HD audio playback. The report comes from Macotakara who suggested that Apple will be upgrading the software in iOS 8 in order for users to take advantage of 24 bit music files, over the current 16-bit functionality.
The report further suggests that Apple will be preparing a major update to its Premium In-Ear Headphone line, an accessory that has not been updated for several years. It is not clear what improvements are going to be made other than to offer HD audio compatibility, but given how infrequently Apple updates its earphones, they are likely to be relatively future proof.
