In some rather unsurprising news, the WSJ has today offered an article saying that the new version of the iPad will look a lot like the iPad mini. The iPad 5 will apparently use the same touch-panel technology that has been incorporated into the screen of the iPad mini, making the iPad 5 significantly thinner and lighter. The iPad mini uses a different type of touch panel from the current generation iPad, with a thinner film-based touch panel as opposed to the glass panels used in the iPad. This film-based technology will be used in the iPad 5 to reduce the weight and depth.
The information is consistent with previous rumors which have suggested that the iPad 5 will have a substantially redesigned form factor, utilizing much of the design hints from the iPad mini. However, this report is suggesting that the new iPad will also incorporate some of the new technologies found in the iPad mini. With the iPad 5 expected to have thinner side bezels, it is also expected to use the same software functionality for intelligently detecting thumb resting on the sides of the display.
