A new report is suggesting that Apple is considering launching a standalone iTunes Radio app as it seeks to compete against other streaming services such as Spotify, Rdio and Pandora. The claim comes from 9to5Mac who are saying that the separate app is in testing phase as part of iOS 8, the next generation operating system for Apple mobile devices which is expected to launch at some point this year. iTunes Radio currently exists as a tab within the Music app that comes with iOS 7, but Apple is apparently planning to roll all of the existing functionality into a separate app for devices with iOS 8.
The source of the information is apparently people who have been briefed with the plans, although the site does caution that the launch of the new iTunes Radio app is not yet finalized and that it may not be launched with iOS 8.
