Following on from our discovery back in January that Apple was recruiting for System Engineers to bring 802.11ac Wi-Fi to the Mac, a new report has apparently given the first physical evidence of this in the form of pictures of a new Broadcom 802.11ac combo card for the Mac. The picture comes from TonyMacx86 (via 9to5Mac) and apparently shows a Broadcom PCI-E card with WLAN and Bluetooth that offers support for 802.11ac wireless, sometimes referred to as ’5G Gigabit Wi-Fi’. The card is a similar shape and size to the existing wireless cards that are found in the iMac.
Apple have been rumored to be updating the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro at WWDC next month, but there has been no mention of iMac updates. However, with the recent launch of the new generation of Intel processor chips, codenamed ‘Haswell’, Apple could be looking to offer a small update to the new iMac as well which, in addition to new processors, could include 802.11ac Gigabit Wi-Fi compatibility.
