A new report is today suggesting that the rumored iPad mini 2, expected to launch at an Apple event on October 22, could actually be a little thicker than the previous model. According to Macotakara, the measurements for the new iPad mini 2 state that the new device would be 7.5mm thick, an increase of 0.3mm over the current generation iPad mini which is is 7.2mm thick.
The new measurements are apparently being sourced from iPad mini 2 cases produced by third party manufacturers, which unfortunately makes them rather unreliable, particularly in the context of a 0.3mm difference. A small increase isn’t outwith the realms of possibility however, particularly since the new device is expected to have a Retina Display. In comparison, the full size third generation iPad had a moderate thickness increase of around 0.6mm over the iPad 2 when it was upgraded to a Retina Display.
The site speculates that the increased thickness is due to the increased battery capacity required to support a Retina Display, rather than the screen itself, but also suggests that the width of the iPad mini 2 would also be increased by 0.2mm, an imperceptible difference in size.
